State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi is a higher learning institution which plays strategic role in developing religious and general knowledge, science and technology based on Islamic tenets. Conducting the new paradigm development which in its role expected to bridge the gap of dichotomy among the sciences, in the society as well as in global context.

The policy of State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi with its new paradigm, by dealing with actual issues as well as future prediction, and also motivated by current phenomenon indicated with high motivation showed by learned groups to integrate the sciences, beside the growing expectation of all users (stakeholders) toward variety of proposed study programs.

In responding that matter, since the opportunity of decentralization for higher learning institutions is widely opened, it’s a momentum which should be grabbed with concrete steps toward programmed development which continue through professional managerial, transparent, self supporting, and democratic system.

As an effort to appreciate its new paradigm, State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi is expected to have the competitive excellence globally. We do appreciate the publishing of this profile. History of State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Sutlhan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi

State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi was born as to cater for Islamic religion growth in Jambi. It was pushed by the eagerness of society and moslem scholars during the period, after paying attention to the number of Islamic Schools in preparing students to further their study to any Islamic University of Institute in Jambi, whereas there is no higher education at that time able to accomodate their alumni, hence performed by a Congress of Moslem Scholars in Jambi in the year of 1957 which resulted in a decision that it’s time to establish an Institute in Jambi. So on 29th September 1960, Faculty of Shari’ah of Al Hikmah Islamic Institute was established under the supervision from Islamic Education Institution (YPI) of Jambi.

In the first three years, Faculty of Syari’ah have shown good relationship between the Dean and the society as well as the local government and also the central government. Later by decision letter of Minister of Religious Affairs No. 50, 1963 dated of May 12th, 1963, Faculty of Shari’ah officially had became the Faculty of Shari’ah, a branch of the State Institute (IAIN) Syarf Hidayatullah Jakarta, which turned later on as a branch of The State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Raden Fatah Palembang. This motivated moslem scholars, the society and the goverment officers, especially the Governor of Jambi, at that time was M.J. Singadekane to strive for the State Islamic Institute in Jambi with more faculties.

On the other side, commencing from the date of 11 July 1965, College of Ma’arif have owned the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Ushuluddin in Jambi and also at that time in Kerinci, the Muhammadiyah Faculty of Shari’ah was also established in March 1964. Based on the motivation above and in order to fulfill the desire of all government officers, society, moslem scholars as well as the local government of Jambi Province, Faculty o Tarbiyah and Ushuluddin in Ma’arif Instituton and Faculty of Shari’ah of Muhammadiyah Islamic Higher learning Institution in Kerinci was proposed to be joined in a place to become faculties in Jambi State Islamic Institute. That proposal was don, based on Indonesia Parliament (MPR Ri) decision No. 11, 1960 and the regulation of Minister of Religious Affairs No. 5, 1963, that for the condition of founding the Institute with three faculties, on 30th September 1965 by Decision letter of the Governor of Jambi No. 18, 1965 formed by Committee of the opening preparation of the State Institute for Islamic Studies of Jambi agreed by the Minister of Religious Affairs with the decision letter, No. 83, 1965. After passing long process, journey and struggel conducted by the committee of the Opening Preparation of State Institute for Islamic Studies of Jambi, Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia finally agreed with the establishment of State Institute for Islamic Studies in the Province of Jambi by the decision letter No. 84, 1967 daed at 27th of July 1967. And based on the Minister of Religious Affairs’ decision, on September 8th 1967/ 3 Jumadil Akhir 1387 H, the commencing of the State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi was launched by the Minister of Relgious Affairs, Prof. K. H. Saifuddin Zuhri.

Few years later, by the release of decision letter from the Minister of Religious Affairs No. 69, 1982 date 27th of July 1982, that the status of faculty which existed in the State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddi Jambi was graded up from young faculty to madya faculty. And with this decision, the state Institute for Islamic Studies are allowed to conduct higher learning studies up to doctoral degrees.

In 1995, when the lecturers with Magister and doctoral degree qualifications are needed, hence the idea open post graduate programs, IAIN Jambi then decided to open the programs. In Februari 1999 Committee of Preparation of Post Graduate Program led by Prof. Dr. H. Sulaiman Abdullah seriously, strive to draw up the preparation program for the founding the post graduate programs and later sent to the Ministry of Religious Afairs in Jakarta on 14th of April 1999, and it was followed by teh Departement of Religious Affairs in with visitations (field visits) to Jambi through a team led by Prof. Dr. H. Mastuhu, M.Ed, to ensure the preparation of State Islamic Institute Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi to open their post graduate programs. There were two visits namely in 14-15 July 1999 and 30-31 Juli 1999. Its resulted in recommedation that IAIN Jambi is eleigble to open the post graduate programs, what was later confirmed by decision latter by the General Director of Islamic Religion No. E/283/1999 dated at September, 2d 1999 about the commencement of Post Graduate Program in IAIN Jambi.

The Institute library has 17.886 titles and collections od books with 74.665 exemplars, in bahasa Indonesia, English, Arabic and some from other languages also available.

LABORATORIES

There are three laboratories:

TRANSPORTATION
